Bodie Island Named USA Weekend “10Best: Scenic lighthouses around the USA”

For its "Scenic lighthouses around the USA," 10Best offers a "look at some of the lighthouses throughout the country that you can climb and take a peek at their original Fresnel lenses, made in Paris." Among the notable lighthouses, 10Best says, "Like its popular neighbor, the Cape Hatteras Light Station, the Bodie Island Light Station (pronounced "body") in North Carolina's Outer Banks sports black and white stripes. A recent restoration reopened the light station to the public in 2013, and visitors can now climb its 214 steps to the top for stunning views and a look at its original 1872 Fresnel lens, with 377 glass prisms, weighing in at 9,000 pounds and valued at $2 million." [Please note the Bodie Island Lighthouse Tours run the third Friday in April through Columbus Day in October. The Bodie Island Visitors Center is open year-round.]

USA Today’s “10Best” Visits the Alluring Outer Banks!

In a 10Best featured article for USA Today, "10Best Visits the Alluring Outer Banks." The article notes, "When it comes to beaching it, everybody is different. Some sun worshippers long for action, a busy Boardwalk and plenty of after-dark activity. Then, there's the Outer Banks. This series of North Carolina barrier islands attracts a mellower crowd. A strip of laid back beach towns connected by bridges, the Outer Banks, or OBX for short, is home to about 60,000 residents year-round. That number nears 500,000 during the summer and fall, vacationers drawn by powdery sand, stellar fishing and a shallow coastline dotted with historic wrecks. Most stay in the McMansions that line the beaches; six, seven and eight-bedroom homes that can easily host a multi-gen family getaway, a girlfriend's weekend or a sporty man-cation."

Jockey’s Ridge among ’50 States, 50 Spots Natural Wonders’

As the USA gears up for its birthday celebration, CNN highlights its favorite natural wonders across the nation in "50 States, 50 Spots Natural Wonders."

For North Carolina, CNN selected Jockey's Ridge at Nags Head, noting, "The dunes of Jockey's Ridge change with the wind, taking on the character of deserts: hot, bright and windy. Despite the volatile terrain, the tallest sand dune on the country's Atlantic Coast provides a scenic perch for sunsets. Temperatures can get high, with the sand often much hotter than the air. For the full experience of the 80- to 100-foot dune, try kiteboarding or sandboarding, which are allowed by permit during parts of the year in a designated area. Hang-gliding lessons are also available. The park on Nags Head on North Carolina's Outer Banks is bounded by Roanoke Sound to the west, home to big cordgrass, black needlerush, marsh pennywort, marsh-elder, cattail and lance-leaved sagittaria. A daylight-use park only, morning visitors might also spy the tracks of nocturnal animals such as foxes and lizards across the sand."

Recent Renovation Puts Bodie Island Light Station Among ’10 Best Lighthouses Around The USA’

outer banks lighthousesJust a short drive South of recently renovated Nags Head Inn stands Bodie Lighthouse on Bodie Island ... also recently renovated, plus now among USA Today’s “10 best lighthouses around the USA.” A lighthouse website and app creator, Kraig Anderson first took a trip to see a lighthouse in North Carolina more than a decade ago, and has since visited every beacon in the country – that’s more than 750 depending how you define them. Of Bodie Island, the article notes, “This 156-foot Outer Banks beacon is often overshadowed by the nearby Cape Hatteras lighthouse, located on the same National Seashore. But its renovation last year, which opened the tower for climbing, makes it a must-see. ‘It’s stunning,’ Anderson says, and one of many standouts in the region. ‘The Outer Banks has the premier collection of lighthouses in the United States."'
